Design
In first sight, the HTC Touch HD has a really, really big display. It is even bigger then iPhone. In the measures of 3.8 inches, the display is dedicated touchscreen use for sure. With the resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, the handset is perfect for viewing multimedia like photos and video. The phone is not small since it has the large screen. Measuring 115 x 62.8 x 12mm and weighing 146.4 grams, this isn't a tiny phone that you can sneakily hide in your pocket. On the front top of the device lie the earpiece, light sensor and video camera. Below is the huge screen and at the bottom located four soft key (Call Start+End, Home, and Back/OK) which are also touch-sensitive.
The phone is come with a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top so you can plug standard headphones in without an adaptor, cutting out all the cable mess. There is also included a stylus in the handset which is located at the right bottom corner. Take out the stylus will turn on the screen, like on the Touch Pro and Diamond. On the back side is simple. at the top, we see the 5MP camera sensor (with no flash) surrounded by a nice brushed-metal mound, and the loudspeaker to the left of it, and that's it. Overall the design of HTC Touch HD is pretty stylish. But the width is a bit wide. Might have some people fell uncomfortable to hold it in hand, especially for the girls.
Software
The HTC Touch HD is running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS in addition of TouchFLO 3D menu interface. Overall the interface is virtually identical to the Diamond. However the additional RAM memory means any lag has virtually gone. Its means the reaction of this device is faster! Actually HTC's attempt at making Windows Mobile more finger-friendly with adding the TouchFLO 3D, but it seems HTC have not success yet. Maybe that is why a stylus is included in this phone.
Music and Video
Music playing in this handset is good. The sound is clear and loud enough. Being able to use a 3.5mm set of headphones is a major plus as we easily to find a compatible headset.
Like I already mentions, the video playback in this handset is amazing as the it has the large screen and high resolution. The recommended player in for this phone would be the CorePlayer. The player not only able to play many more file formats than WMP, but the player will stretch all video to the whole screen regardless of resolution. What about the pre-installed Windows Media Player?Just forget about it, because the video doesn't stretch to the whole screen unless the video is outputted in WVGA resolution. What a shame!
Camera
The camera in HTC Touch HD is somewhat disappointed. The Performance is let down by a lack of flash and while the picture quality is in average level only. The handset doesn't have a dedicated shutter button for camera-you must activate the shutter with the shutter icon on the screen. The camera also shoots video in MPEG4 or H.263 format with unlimited recording as long as you have spare storage.
Connectivity
We are happy that HTC Touch HD supports many type connections. To connect to the internet HSDPA and WLan is ideal if you want the fast internet speed while GPRS allow EDGE you to connect to the internet when no 3G and Wi-Fi available. The phone capable to receive consistent signal, which is very rarely seen on other phone. Of cause it is still depending on which network you're on. The Google maps also work fine with the GPS receiver and its looks great on the large screen.
Final Words
HTC is once again made a big progress in its touchscreen phone. The HTC Touch HD is really lot better then HTC Diamond. If you love Diamond then you will love Touch HD more. However, it is still has some disadvantages on it like the less finger-friendly touchscreen, poor camera features and lack of lack of hardware controls. Although I have some little things to complain about it, but I still have to admit that HTC Touch HD is a excellent phone!
